Britney Spears, through her lawyer, admitted guilt to a less serious charge on Monday. This helps her avoid jail time after prosecutors in California said she drove under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The 44-year-old singer didn’t go to court in Ventura County. But her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, said she would plead guilty to a lesser charge related to drunk driving. This means she’ll get a year of probation, have to take a DUI class, and pay fines.
The district attorney’s office stated that the plea bargain was typical for first-time DUI offenders with no accidents or injuries and a low blood-alcohol level. It’s even more common for defendants like Spears, who are motivated to fix their issues and get help, as she demonstrated by voluntarily entering a rehab center in April.
In Monday’s court hearing, Spears got a light probation, meaning no required meetings with a parole officer. If she’s stopped by police, she temporarily gives up her right to refuse searches and tests. However, the judge agreed with her lawyer that this doesn’t apply to her house.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said after the hearing that Spears accepted full responsibility. He pointed out that DUI is a serious crime and stressed the importance of her following the court’s orders, which include ongoing treatment for substance abuse, weekly meetings with a therapist, and monthly check-ins with a psychiatrist.
Nasarenko stated, “We don’t want Miss Spears to commit another crime.”
On Thursday, she was charged with a minor DUI. Because it was a minor charge, she didn’t have to go to court for the first hearing. Her team didn’t say if she would show up, and the hearing had more reporters than usual for Ventura, a coastal city with around 110,000 people, located about 70 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
The singer owns a house in Ventura County, close to where she was arrested on March 4. Back then, her spokesperson said her behavior was unacceptable and hoped the arrest would help her make needed changes. Spears and her team haven’t spoken about the charges since.
The California Highway Patrol said she was stopped for driving her black BMW fast and unsafely on U.S. 101. She seemed drunk, did some roadside tests, and then was arrested and taken to jail.
Officials stated in the legal document that Spears had alcohol and drugs in her body, but they didn’t say what kind of drugs or her alcohol level.
