KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will likely take over the Multan Sultans team in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2026. This is because the current owner’s agreement ends on December 31, 2025, according to sources.

The PCB will probably decide on this plan within a week. They will run the team for a year and then auction it off to a new owner in 2027, The News reported.

This plan could save the PCB about $4 million each year by cutting costs of $3 million from a main fund and $1 million in sponsorships. But, a report says the PCB would lose $8.5 million in franchise fees that year. Last November, Ali Tareen, the owner of Multan Sultans, left the PSL franchise because of a strained relationship with the PCB that lasted a year.

The Multan Sultans were first sold to the Schon Group for $5.2 million, making them the sixth PSL team. This price was the highest at the time, twice as much as Karachi Kings’ $2.6 million. However, after the first season, the Schon Group thought the deal was not profitable.

When they failed to pay, the PCB cancelled the agreement. In December 2018, Alamgir Tareen and his nephew Ali Tareen bought the franchise for $6.3 million. The team has been very competitive, but disagreements between the owners and PCB have led to changes in who owns and runs the team.
